TRC Worldwide Engineering provided structural engineering design and construction administration services for NAP of the Americas, a mission-critical telecommunications and data center facility serving as a central connectivity hub for providers of telephone, internet, cable, and global communications networks.
Delivered on an ultra fast-track schedule and topped out in just 25 weeks, the six-story structure occupies an entire city block in downtown Miami. With 17-foot floor-to-floor heights, the building reaches the vertical scale of a typical 16-story tower, accommodating the intensive spatial and mechanical demands of large-scale data infrastructure.
Engineered to withstand Category 5 hurricane forces, the facility sits 14 feet above sea level and outside the 500-year floodplain — a critical design consideration in a coastal environment. The structure is supported on 1,250 auger-cast piles extending 45 feet deep, forming a robust foundation system capable of supporting extraordinary structural loads.
The superstructure incorporates approximately 300,000 concrete masonry units and more than 90,000 linear feet of precast beams and joists. Construction required over 38,000 cubic yards of concrete, 3,000 tons of reinforcing steel, and 7,500 tons of roof ballast to meet wind resistance and structural performance requirements.
Typical floors were engineered to support 180 pounds per square foot, increasing to 300 pounds per square foot at building corners to address amplified wind pressures and localized loading demands.
The result is a hardened, high-capacity facility designed for resilience, speed of delivery, and uninterrupted performance — infrastructure built to operate when everything else cannot.
