TRC Worldwide Engineering served as the structural engineer for the Tennessee State University Health Sciences Building - a landmark, state-funded project and the first new academic facility constructed on campus in more than 25 years. Prominently located along the university’s academic quad, the building anchors TSU’s commitment to advancing healthcare education through modern, collaborative learning environments.

The approximately 100,000-square-foot, four-story structure is framed in steel and designed to meet Tennessee High-Performance Building Requirements. TRC’s structural design supports a highly flexible and program-rich interior, accommodating a wide range of instructional, laboratory, and administrative functions within a single, cohesive facility.

The building consolidates TSU’s allied health programs and includes specialized spaces such as simulation labs, a gait lab, computer labs, and soft study areas, along with classrooms and a tiered lecture hall capable of hosting up to 1,120 occupants. Structural coordination was critical in supporting large-span spaces, open floor plans, and integrated lab environments while maintaining efficiency and constructability.

A defining architectural feature is the glass-lined concourse facing the academic quad, which introduces abundant natural light and creates a strong visual connection to campus. TRC’s design enables these open, transparent spaces while ensuring structural performance and long-term durability.

Site development included the demolition of existing buildings, the addition of a 71-space parking lot, and approximately 1,000 feet of new campus roadway to improve circulation and connectivity.
