TRC provided structural engineering for the comprehensive preservation and adaptive reuse of the historic Bedford County Courthouse, ensuring that modern government functions could be integrated without compromising the building’s historic fabric or long-term performance. Working alongside architect Kline Swinney Associates, TRC evaluated existing structural systems through detailed as-built documentation and helped shape a phased approach that supported envelope restoration, system replacements, and site improvements while maintaining operational continuity.
As part of Phase 1, TRC’s structural scope supported:
– Basement improvements, including ADA/MEP upgrades and public-use modifications without overstressing existing floor systems
– Restoration and re-adaptation of the second-floor historic courtroom, requiring careful integration of new AV/IT, mechanical, and life-safety systems within a protected structural envelope
– Third-floor conversions for Planning & Codes, incorporating new loads, penetrations, and barrier removals while preserving original structure and finishes
This completed project demonstrates TRC’s ability to design within tight historic constraints — upgrading building systems, accessibility, and occupancy while preserving the architectural and civic legacy of a landmark courthouse.
