Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center Expansion – Alamogordo, New Mexico

As part of its 70th anniversary in 2019, Gerald Champion Regional Medical Center launched a $65 million expansion to enhance patient-centered care, circulation, and operational efficiency. TRC Worldwide Engineering provided structural engineering, steel detailing, and MEP engineering services for the project, which added significant new facilities and upgraded core hospital infrastructure.

The expansion introduced a 64,000-square-foot, three-story Medical Office Building with a 14,000 SF Ambulatory Surgery Center and 46,000 SF of physician suites, along with a 29,735 SF two-story addition for the emergency department, office space, and a rooftop helipad for two helicopters. Other additions included a 6,408 SF Cancer Center, enclosed walkways and corridors totaling over 4,000 SF, and 3,000 SF of new entry canopies.

The master plan also implemented key hospital upgrades: relocation and construction of a one-story, 2,760 SF Central Sterile department, new dual-fuel clean steam boilers, modular AHUs for surgical and emergency suite expansions, renovation of the hospital pharmacy to meet USP 797 and 800 standards, and expansion of one of the two Central Energy Plants with new boilers and chillers designed for future consolidation and growth.

TRC detailed and coordinated 410 tons of structural steel using the Early Steel Detailing process, producing shop drawings at the design development stage. Through 3D modeling and direct collaboration with the contractor and fabricator, TRC resolved complex steel challenges, accommodated heavy rooftop mechanical units, and delivered shop drawings to AISC and seismic standards.
