TRC provided structural steel detailing services for Niswonger Children’s Hospital, a 50-bed regional pediatric facility.
The project included 82,600 square feet of new construction and 9,200 square feet of renovations, highlighted by a 5,200-square-foot pediatric emergency department. TRC’s detailing scope supported approximately 583 tons of structural steel, requiring careful coordination with the building’s expressive architectural geometry.
Designed by Karlsberger, the facility was conceived to resemble interlocking “puzzle pieces,” symbolizing the relationship between the hospital and the community. A signature feature is the kinetic stainless steel façade by artist Ned Kahn, composed of a grid of small metal plates that move with the wind to reflect changing light and sky conditions. The exterior utilizes limestone cladding to convey a refined civic character.
Interior spaces emphasize a healing environment through a three-story glass atrium, window-lined corridors, and dichroic glass skylights that maximize natural daylight.
