St. Francis Hospital & Health Centers - Acute Care Expansion Indianapolis, Indiana

TRC Worldwide Engineering, Inc. provided structural engineering design and construction administration services on this six-story building over partial basement. The 400,000 square foot expansion to the existing hospital is used for Acute Care services. This project utilized a unique fast-track design process whereby TRC provided many early drawing packages to assist the owner in opening the facility a year earlier than in a standard design process. TRC first provided a steel mill order package so that structural steel could be ordered ahead of start of construction so the owner could save hundreds of thousands of dollars on steel and allow early steel detailing. TRC then provided a foundation package so construction could begin on foundations before the design was complete. These two packages were provided prior to completion of architectural drawings.

The $250 million medical facility features exam and operating rooms, 120-additional patient rooms, and new dining and kitchen areas CT exam room, operating rooms, and radiology. Many of the rooms had unique equipment such as high powered microscopes and CT Scan, which required special consideration and design to limit vibrations. Structural load considerations for “Green roofs” were provided for the roofs under the patient rooms. TRC utilized REVIT to model the structures.

Key Structural Components:
  • Composite structural steel frame
  • Reinforced concrete shear walls
  • Augercast foundation walls so basement could be placed next to existing foundations
